Chapter 13

“What the hell?”

Candi took a step back and stumbled. Grady grasped her arm more firmly and put an arm around her waist. “Is that—”

“No, it can’t be. Fuzz Rhoton impounded that truck for me. It just looks like the same one. Lots of trucks like that around, I’m sure.”

Candi looked up at him, a weak smile playing around her lips. “Who are you trying to convince? Me or you?”

Grady wasn’t sure. “Come on. Let’s check it out.”

They walked the rest of the way to the shop. Candi gave the truck a wide berth, and he was about to have a look inside when Candi exclaimed, “Grady!”

She pulled up short and grabbed his arm with both hands, stopping dead in her tracks. He looked back at her, taking in her wide green eyes filled with fear. He grasped her shoulders. “What is it?”

She pointed. “The door to the shop is open. I’m sure I locked it.”

Grady glanced at the open door. “Did Bud adjust it?”

Candi nodded.

“Stay here. I’ll check it out.”

She grabbed his arm again. “No, Grady. Don’t go in there. I have a bad feeling.”

Woody came skidding to a halt beside them, out of breath like he’d run full out all the way from the courthouse. “Your Uncle Tom called. Said Boots Hensley’s truck was parked right in the middle of town. I saw it as soon as I stood on the courthouse lawn. I got here as quick as I could.”

“Easy, Woody. You’re gonna give yourself a heart attack. Let’s all just calm down. You know as well as I do that truck’s impounded. This one has to belong to somebody else.”

“But—”

“There’ll be time to worry about the truck later,” Grady said to his deputy. “Looks like someone just broke into Candi’s shop. Back me up.”

Bud DeFoe joined them next, with several others moving in their direction. “Bud, stay with Candi and keep these people back. Someone may have broken into the shop. Woody and I are going in.”

Bud nodded and put an arm around Candi.

“Be careful,” Candi whispered.

Grady unholstered his gun. Woody did the same and followed him as he shouldered the door the rest of the way open. The glass display cases were broken. Glass crunched under their feet. Merchandise was strewn everywhere. “Police! Come out with your hands up!”

No response. Adrenaline pumped through his veins, his heart raced, and blood pounded in his ears. He quickly moved over to the long hallway that led to the back of the shop and eased forward to have a look. “Clear.”

They moved in unison down to the two shops that opened up off the hallway. He signaled for Woody to take one and him the other. They both looked inside the rooms, went in. The place had been torn apart as if someone had been looking for something, but it was unoccupied as well. Someone had spray painted in red on the wall, “Go home witch.” Bile rose in the back of Grady’s throat, but he backed to the doorway.
